Local AM joins fight to save nursing home

11.08.43am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 27th Mar 2007

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has pledged his support for the Unison campaign to keep the endangered Glyndulais Residential Home in Neath open.

While no formal announcement has been made stating the residential home for the elderly will close, it is widely believed that the Council has already taken the decision to close it.

In a press release issued by the Council on the 18th January the Council said 'it is clear that the status quo at Glyndulais cannot remain, and that we have a public responsibility to assess our options and identify a way forward'. Mr. Black wants the Council to issue reassurances that this does not mean closure.

"The Council are trying to justify closing the facility when they point to the other new developments, but they are forgetting the welfare of those who are currently staying in Glyndulais, and those who want their loved ones to be as close as possible to them in what can often be distressing times for patients and their families," he said.

"The people of Neath do not want to lose this facility. Local care is important to people. Allowing the elderly to remain in their own community is not something we should be putting a price on. I urge the Council not to close Glyndulais Residential Home and to listen to the strong campaign being staged by Unison and local residents."
