Assembly Member congratulates Student Union on tidy-up campaign12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 24th Sep 2007
The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has congratulated Sabbatical Officers at Swansea University's Student Union for their campaign to ensure that students are acting responsibly with their rubbish. The campaign, known as 'Kerb It' is primarily focused on those students living in the Uplands and Brynmill area of the City. Those involved want to ensure that rubbish is being placed on the kerbside on collection day, rather than being left to accumulate in gardens and other areas. "It is great to see the Student Union working to educate students on matters that can be so important in local communities," said Mr. Black. "The vast majority of students already do what they can to ensure good relations with their neighbours, but it always helps to educate those who don't know especially at the beginning of an academic year when many are new to the City and are unaware of rubbish collection days." "If we are to avoid anti-social behaviour in areas such as Uplands, Brynmill and Mount Pleasant, where there is a high concentration of shared houses and homes in multiple occupation, then there is a need for joint working between the Council, landlords, the University and the Students Union. The Students Union have shown that they are willing to contribute through this campaign, now it is up to the Council and other parties to do their bit to minimise problems in these areas."
