Members of UCU, UNISON, ACM and ATL will be holding a public protest against the WAG under-funding of colleges at the front of Swansea College at 12 noon on 25th March. This will be followed by a similar protest at 1.45pm outside Gorseinon College.
Swansea College has been advised by the Labour-Plaid Cymru Welsh Government that its funding for the academic year 2009-10 has been cut by around 7.5%. This means that they are currently facing a shortfall of some £1.5 million for next year. Gorseinon College is in a similar situation.
Commenting on the protests, Mr. Black said that the priorities of Plaid Cymru and Labour Ministers are all wrong: "At a time of recession the idea that Government should be reducing resources for education and training is ludicrous. This is precisely the time when we need to be investing in upskilling and educating the workforce of the future and enabling colleges to provide a breadth of courses that will assist employers seeking to hire the local workforce."
"Welsh Liberal Democrats have already raised these cuts in further education at the Assembly on a number of occasions and will continue to press Ministers to reverse their decision. I have spoken to a number of lecturers who have informed me that vital courses may be axed as a result of this underfunding. These cuts make no sense whatsoever."
